Understanding Strategy Through Visual Analytics

ERMSIM – Strategic Management Simulator
This is a systematic goal-refinement and intentional model simulator. It takes as input simulation models including: organization structures model, organizational goal model, organization intentional model of vision, mission, strategies and implementation intentions model used in simulation and estimating likelihood of successful strategy execution. Users can set up experiments to explore, and examine the effects of strategic decisions and strategic alternatives on organization capacity development, and growth. ERMSIM supports visualization methods that enable users to explore and examine strategic alternatives (throughthe set of chains of cause-effect relationships) and options with respect to the impact on achieving the strategic objective. This makes it easier for users to consume simulation output without having to be proficient in the logics underlying goal-refinement.

ERMSIM Strategy Analytics Simulator
A strategy analytics simulation model describes strategic alternatives/options as a set of hypotheses of possible courses of action that provide the best way for the organization to achieve its long-term objectives. The strategic decision-making processes are modeled as intentional goal models that capture the organizational goals as well as the outcomes of decision processes on what strategic alternatives and options to pursue to successfully respond to opportunities and threats in the organization's environment. The goals refinement method enables the cascading of goals and performance measures from corporate strategy through business strategies to functional methods and tactics to operations activities and processes. Models capture the relationships among many factors allowing the assessment of risk or potential opportunity associated with a particular set of conditions, guiding decision-making for candidate transactions, events, and processes.

ERMSIM Strategic Management - Business Strategy Simulator
ERMSIM Strategy Management - Business Strategy Simulator is a goal refinement simulator that enables systematic analysis and evaluation of a strategy (formulation and/or implementation plan) to determine the efficiency and effectiveness of the strategic options prior to investment decisions in initiatives to implement these strategies. ERMSIM based strategy simulation enables the end-to-end evaluation of strategic decisions of real world organizations from coporate strategy through business/competitive strategies to functional styrategies to better understand and gain insight into strategic decisions and the factors that influence implementation and execution success/failure.

Strategy simulation models are comprised of social systems models, elaborated with their goals, intentions, and motivations. The simulation model of the organization recognizes the primacy of social actors which are viewed as being intentional, i.e., they have goals, beliefs, abilities, and commitments. Unlike traditional systems analysis methods which strive to abstract away from the people aspects of systems, the analysis focuses on how well the goals of various actors are achieved given some configuration of relationships among a set of actors, and what re-configurations of those relationships can help actors advance their strategic interests. In creating models of real world situations and/or complex socio-technical systems, we adopt as a premise that the social world is unknowable and uncontrollable, with respect to the behavior of actors and events, to a large extent.

Users can create social systems model of the business organization and its environments specifying the purpose, mission, and strategic objectives to be attained. The vision, and mission goals model, and the strategic objectives can be cascaded vertically and horizontally throughout the whole organization facilitated by the organizational structures underlying the social systems network.

ERMSIM Strategic Plan Simulator - Strategy Analytics Goal Simulation Methods
Strategy Analytics Goal Simulation Method enables the creation of empirical and analytical models to support evaluation of strategic plans. The plan simulator and analyzer enables a planner confronted with a situation, an objective, and a set of courses of action (or plans) which are believed to achieve the objective to run a simulation to evaluate the behavior of one or more plans against different conditions in the domain (where the plans will be executed) in order to establish their degree of success/failure, and identify dependencies on the relevant parameters. The final objective of the planner is to make choices regarding which plan to adopt according to pre-established criteria.

The goal modeling language enables the creation of models that capture the decisive decision points and the associated network of actions that if taken, would achieve the intended objectives. In addition, users can also create social systems models of the organization and its environment to represent the context in which the plan is enacted and executed. The emphasis in the social systems is the representation of the dependency relations between actors, the responsibility relationships between actors and the goals and actions assigned to them to perform, and the impact of the outcomes of those actions on organizational behavior.

Strategy Execution Simulation - Scenario Based Analysis
Strategy execution simulation provides additional source of feed forward information that allows management to assess whether the overall strategy should be changed in light of unfolding events and results associated with incremental steps, and actions that implement the overall strategy. The strategy execution simulation and evaluation methods provide the mechanisms to improve the chances of successful execution through better management of the factors that influence execution failure/success resulting in improving the likelihood of successful execution.

Benefits of Strategy Execution Simulation
The following are some examples of the benefits of strategy execution simulation:
  1. Improving Strategic Decision - Reducing the incidence of bad decisions and the viability of strategic decisions by improving decision makers' knowledge about external environment factors and possible reactions of environment actors (stakeholders) such as customers, competitors, and broader public (i.e., society, regulators, community, investors - the world). .
  2. Improving managers' capacity to overcome the cognitive burden associated with the inter-relationships among strategic choices. For example, the strategic decision to enter a new market will require major allocation of resources across different parts of the organization such as marketing, finance, operations, etc.
  3. Improving managers' understanding in that their choice of assumptions is arbitrary and might not accord with reality, and exposing strategic decisions that logically flow from bad or erroneous assumptions to risk of leading to bad or poor decisions.
  4. Improving managers' awareness of individual differences in strategic choices due to differences beliefs and assumptions leading to better negotiated strategic decisions.
  5. Reducing Chances of Bad Decisions -The nature of strategic decisions makes it possible for example, for decision makers e.g., managers within an organization, to have widely varying and incorrect beliefs about environmental factors such as market facts, for example Customers’ utility for a product/service, and managers’ perceptions of the customers’ perceptions of quality for that product/service to be inversely related. These beliefs influence the choice of assumptions underlying the manager’s strategic decisions and determine decision success/failure. Most managers don’t understand that their choice of assumptions is arbitrary influenced by their beliefs and that they might not accord with reality so strategic decisions logically flowing from bad/erroneous assumptions can lead to bad/poor decisions which can in turn lead to poor/bad decisions and ultimately to strategies failing at execution.
